If you’ve ever been to Greece then you know exactly what I’m talking about.
The typical menu at a restaurant there includes many dishes that are cooked up in olive oil.
It’s a cuisine that has developed over centuries and is now widely popular around the globe.
But if you’re not familiar with the term “olive oil cooking” then let me explain what it means.
In short, it’s when you cook food using olive oil as a base ingredient, rather than butter or other fats such as margarine.
What is tyrokafteri?
Tyrokafteri (also spelled tyropita) is one of those dishes where you can see how the cuisine has evolved over time.
The name comes from the word for “turbot,” which is the fish used in the original version of this dish.
But these days you can use any white-fleshed fish such as cod, haddock, sea bass, or halibut.
To make this classic Greek salad, you start by marinating the fish in an olive oil and lemon dressing.
Then you season it with salt and pepper before cutting it into thin slices.
Next, you add chopped tomatoes, onions, olives, capers, and parsley to the bowl.
You mix everything together so that it becomes evenly coated in the sauce.
Finally, you top it off with bread crumbs and bake it until it’s golden brown.
And that’s it – your very own tasty Greek Mediterranean meal ready to serve!
This dish is typically served warm, but it also makes a great lunch to be packed for later on.
What are the ingredients in tyrokafteri?
When you make a classic Greek meal, you’ll usually include meat, vegetables, potatoes, and cheese.
But these elements aren’t necessarily included in every dish.
There are plenty of recipes out there that don’t have any meat.
And some others use no potato at all.
This recipe isn’t like that though.
It uses a mixture of meat – chicken, lamb, beef, pork, and veal – but also includes onions, garlic, tomatoes, olives, peppers, and green beans.
You can add dried fruits such as raisins or currants, and herbs such as thyme or oregano.
And while it may look like a lot of different ingredients, they’re actually combined into one big mass.
This mixture is known as a picadillo, which comes from the Spanish word meaning “little thief.”
It’s a popular dish in Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and parts of South America.
And because it’s typically made with ground meat, it’s called a ground meat stew.
The name “picadillo” is used in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic too.
Now that we’ve learned what a picadillo is, let’s take a closer look at its components.
How is tyrokafteri made?
Tyrokafteri is a traditional dish from the Greek island of Santorini.
It’s a mixture of ground meat, onions, and spices that’s cooked in olive oil until it’s tender and well-browned.
In recent years, however, tyrokafteri has become increasingly popular in the U.S. and elsewhere due to its unique combination of flavors and textures.
And since it can be prepared in advance, it makes an excellent party dish or picnic item.
It’s also very easy to customize, so you can add your own favorite ingredients like capers, olives, peppers, and feta cheese.
It’s great served warm but can also be eaten cold.
Here’s how to prepare it:
1 pound ground beef
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2 cloves garlic minced
1/4 cup tomato sauce
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

Add the onions and sauté them until they start to soften, about 5 minutes.

What does tyrokafteri taste like?

I wanted to see if I could come up with a recipe that would give the same crunchy texture and flavor without the meat.
How can tyrokafteri be served?
When I first started learning about Greek cuisine I was told that tyrokafteri (pronounced tee-roe-kah-FEH-thee) was one of the most famous Greek dishes.
This traditional stew is made with ground meat, usually lamb, and vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, peppers, eggplant, and onions.
The recipe itself is incredibly simple — just mix everything together and put it all in the oven.
While the original recipe calls for lamb, the version I tried recently uses chicken instead.
And while I love both, I thought I’d try something different by adding an extra layer of flavor by adding a few spices to my dish.
Here’s how I prepared it.
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1/3″ cubes
1 cup diced red bell pepper
1 cup diced yellow bell pepper
1 cup diced zucchini
1 cup diced eggplant
1 large russet potato, peeled and cubed
1 can whole plum tomatoes (or 3 fresh tomatoes)
1 bay leaf
Salt and pepper to taste
I used a cast iron skillet but you could use any heavy bottom pan you have on hand.
Just make sure your pan is big enough to hold all the ingredients without overcrowding them.
What are the health benefits of tyrokafteri?

Here are just a few:
You can easily overdose on fat by eating too much of it.
This is especially true if you’re trying to make a large batch that will last longer.
Also, excess fat can lead to weight gain, which isn’t good for anyone looking to lose weight.
Olive oil has a short shelf life – it has a tendency to go rancid.
So make sure you buy extra virgin olive oil instead of regular olive oil.
If you have access to high-quality olive oil, you may want to opt to use that instead of plain ol’ olive oil.
You should be careful how much salt you add to your recipes.

I first made this dish back in 2016 and I was so happy with how it turned out that I immediately started making it again.
The only problem was that I had to throw away all my old jars of tyrokafteri because they were just too small.
In order to make sure that you can enjoy this delicious dish for years to come, you need to keep your tyrokafteri in a jar with a wide-mouth lid that will allow air to circulate while preventing any excess moisture from forming.
This way, you won’t have to worry about mold growing on top of your delicious sauce.
Here are two different methods for storing tyrokafteri.
You can choose which one you prefer based on your budget and storage space constraints.
Method #1: Use an Existing Jar
You can use any wide-mouth glass jar that you currently own.
Just be sure to clean it thoroughly before filling it with the prepared sauce.
You may want to line the inside of the jar with plastic wrap before covering it with the sauce.
This will help prevent any condensation from forming and also protect the sauce from touching the glass surface.
Method #2: Buy A New Wide Mouth Glass Jar
