Let’s get started.
Best Overall: Miele Classic G4228SCUSS
Miele distinguishes itself by making almost 100% of their components right in Germany. That gets you a very high-quality dishwasher, without any cheap Chinese parts.
If you want to invest in a Miele dishwasher, there’s no better option than the Miele Classic G4228SCUSS. These are the features you’ll get when buying one of them:
Great Design
Even with a non-integrated, visible control panel, the G4228SCUSS has an elegant and versatile design.
The stainless steel exterior will resist scratching and won’t be prone to show fingerprints and smudges.
And, if it gets dirty, it’ll be very easy to wipe clean.
The tub is made out of stainless steel, which is better at insulating noise and at washing dishes at higher temperatures.
The inside can hold up to 16 plate settings, and it has very tall side walls with notches.
This will help hold your most delicate dishes to keep them safer during the washing process.
Loading and unloading is very easy with the ergonomically-designed racks.
The Multi-Confort area in the lower basket allows you to fold down the dish rack.
I found this extremely helpful to keep you from feeling like you’re trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle when trying to place your larger pans and pots.
Third Rack
Miele’s Third Rack Cutlery Tray allows you to use as much space as possible by dedicating a slim third tray exclusively for cutlery.
This rack individually separates your cutlery to protect them from scratches.
The third rack is washed by a full-length spray arm to guarantee a thorough wash.
Simple Control Panel
Unlike many complex control panels, the G4228SCUSS’s is very simple.
The dishwasher gives you four options to choose from:
- Pots and pans: For tough stains
- Normal: For everyday dishwashing
- SaniWash: For sterilizing
- Rinse & Hold: For quick, no-detergent rinse.
You can also it to set up the Delay Start function, which can be used to program a cycle with up to 24 hours in advance.
Noise
The G4228SCUSS is rated at 46 decibels, which is quieter than a conversation, and lower than most dishwashers.
Optimized Drying Process
Miele uses condensation drying which, although not the most effective process, it’ll get the job done.
To improve this process, the G4228SCUSS has a separate, cold air fan.
This fan creates a cold current of air to quicken the condensation process.
Dimensions and Weight
At 107 lbs (48.5 kg), this dishwasher is a bit on the heavier side. Here are its measurements:
- Height: 33-11/16 – 36-1/4 inches
- Width: 23-9/16 inches
- Depth: 22-7/16 inches
Most Affordable Dishwasher: Frigidaire FFCD2418US
If you have a tight budget, the Frigidaire FFCD2418US is a great option. This dishwasher is affordable, powerful, and will last you a long time.
Clean and Timeless Design
Like the rest of the options here, the Frigidaire FFCD2418US has a clean stainless steel design.
Although it’s very affordable, the minimal design of it is almost on par with some of the most expensive options listed here.
Although the inside lacks a third rack, it can easily fit up to 14 place settings.
Powerful Cleaning and Drying
The Frigidaire FFCD2418US has three separate spray levels to get into all crannies and nooks of your dishes.
The self-cleaning filtration system helps eliminate all food residues, making sure that, once they’re off your dish, they’re off all dishes.
The sanitization capabilities are NSF Certified, killing up to 99.9% of common household bacteria through heat alone.
Although its performance won’t be winning any awards, it’ll be efficient enough to keep the padding down to just your plastics.
Simple Controls
The control panel is located right in front of the dishwasher. You can set up the following cleaning cycles:
- Energy Saver: To save electricity
- 1 Hour: For quick loads
- Normal Wash: For everyday washing
- Heavy Wash: For the dirtiest loads
- Rinse only: To run a cycle without detergent
You can also use it to set it to run up to 4 hours in advance and to easily lock controls by holding the Options button for three seconds.
Noise
Although this is the noisiest option listed here, it’s not the noisiest dishwasher.
At 55 decibels, you don’t need to leave the room every time the dishwasher is on, and it’s still silent than the average dishwasher running at 60 decibels
Dimensions and Weight
This dishwasher weighs only 84 pounds (38.1 kg), which is quite light for a dishwasher this size.
- Height: 35.5 inches
- Width: 24 inches
- Depth: 25 inches
Quietest Dishwasher: Bosch SHEM78Z55N
Bosch makes some of the best dishwashers out there. That’s why, when I was looking for quiet-yet-powerful dishwashers, it was no surprise to find that a Bosch was the best option available.
Although there are technically quieter dishwashers out there, the Bosch 800 Series SHEM78Z55N isn’t quiet because it’s not powerful enough.
This dishwasher is designed to be both as powerful and as quiet as it can be.
Seamless Design
This dishwasher has a seamless and minimal stainless steel design.
This helps it fit right at home in any kitchen and makes it resistant to scratches and smudges.
The control panel is hidden away on the door, so all you see is one silver door when closed.
Whisper-Quiet
With a sound rating of 40 dBA, you’ll probably not be able to hear it working unless you’re standing right next to it.
Luckily, you don’t need to hear it wash to know if it’s washing.
InfoLight
The InfoLight is a feature I wish all dishwashers had, and definitely a must with this dishwasher.
Since it’s so quiet and has no display that can be seen while running, the SHEM78Z55N has Bosch’s patented InfoLight.
The InfoLight is a beam of red light that shines on your floor to let you know the washer is still working.
Once the light is off, you can safely open the door and store away your dishes.
Powerful Washing
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how well the SHEM78Z55N handled difficult stains.
Its powerful Sanitize cycle reaches temperatures of around 160 F, so it’s great to fully sanitize anything without the use of bleach or chemicals.
Washing, however, is only half of what this dishwasher does well; the other half being the drying.
High-tech Drying
The SHEM78Z55N uses a high-tech drying system to get all your dishes dry and ready to store with its CrystalDry feature.
CristalDry uses zeolite crystals, which heats up when in contact with water.
With these minerals, Bosch lowers the energy cost by using the heating element to replenish the zeolite, instead of using it to dry dishes directly.
This patented process also allows Bosch to offer a dishwasher that actually dries all your dishes, from your pots and cutlery to those tuppers you usually had to dry with a paper towel.
This drying process will save you a lot of time by allowing you to store your dishes as soon as the cycle is done, all while saving energy.
Third Rack
Although I didn’t think it was as well-executed as the one in the Miele, the MyWay rack, located at the top, is great to fit cereal bowls, knives, chopsticks and other items, to get the most out of your dishwasher space.
It can also be adjusted to three different heights.
Control Panel
Although the control panel is perfectly integrated on the door, it can be a bit confusing and challenging.
The controls don’t always respond to the first touch and the simple display and buttons aren’t great for in-depth options.
For example, if you want to increase or reduce drying intensity, you need to push both the Normal Cycle button and the Start button at the same time, then press the Normal Cycle button again until the screen changes, then press the Rinse Cycle button.
Sounds confusing?
This is how you’ll have to access all secondary options.
Dimensions and Weight
At 97 pounds (44 kg), this dishwasher is as heavy as most dishwashers.
- Height: 33 7/8 inches
- Width: 23 9/16 inches
- Depth: 23 3/4 inches
Most Efficient Dishwasher: Bosch SHXM4AY55N
With many of Bosch’s main features, the Bosch 300 Series SHXM4AY55N is great at combining low noise and high power with very high electric efficiency.
Full stainless steel design
You may be noticing a trend here: I love stainless steel.
It’s easy to clean and hard to scratch.
That’s why I loved this simple and elegant design.
No buttons nor panels to break the simplicity of the dishwasher look.
With such a simple look, this dishwasher will fit right at home in practically any kitchen.
InfoLight
Like other Bosch dishwashers, the SHXM4AY55N comes with InfoLight, a red beam that’s projected directly on the floor to indicate the dishwasher is running.
ExtraShine and Extended Drying
Although the drying is slightly underwhelming, you can select the Extra Dry option with any cycle.
This option raises the temperature and extends the time to ensure your dishes are fully dry when the cycle ends.
If you’re washing glasses and other glossy, shiny dishes and utensils, the ExtraShine feature also extends the drying time and raises the temperature at the perfect level to avoid water spots and keep everything as shiny as possible.
Third Rack
The third rack in the SHXM4AY55N is perfect for cleaning flatware at the top of the dishwasher.
You can keep your silverware clean and safe by placing it individually at the top.
This is great to make sure they’re thoroughly washed, and to get up to 30% more loading space than dishwashers without it. It also makes it very easy to load.
Controls
This dishwasher uses physical buttons instead of touch buttons, which I find last longer and are easier to use.
With it you can set up these cycles:
- Normal: For regular loads
- Speed60: For smaller loads
- Rinse: For quick, no-detergent rise
- Delicate: For your fine china
- Sanitize: For sterilizing
The secondary options, like with the last dishwasher, are also hidden behind button combinations, so you’ll have to get out the manual if you want to increase temperature or adjust settings.
Energy Consumption
The SHXM4AY55N is perfect if you want to save resources.
It exceeds the Energy Star requirements for water efficiency by 69% and the energy usage by 20%
That way you can comfortably extend the drying period when needed, knowing you’re consuming fewer resources than with most other dishwashers.
Noise
Although this isn’t the quietest option here, the dishwasher operates at a very comfortable 48db, lower than a conversation and than most other dishwashers out there.
Dimensions and Weight
At 97 pounds (44 kg), this dishwasher is as heavy as most dishwashers.
- Height: 33 7/8 inches
- Width: 23 9/16 inches
- Depth: 22 9/16 inches
Best Compact Dishwasher: Frigidaire FFBD1831US
If you’re looking for a compact dishwasher, the Frigidaire 18 Inch Full Console Built-In Dishwasher is the best option for you.
Powerful, silent, and energy-efficient, this is the best dishwasher for small kitchens.
Compact Design
The Frigidaire FFBD1831US does a lot with its 18-inch measurements.
This dishwasher can fit up to 8 place settings in one single load.
Its clean stainless steel exterior makes it easy to clean and very resistant to scratches.
Simple Control Panel
Although the control panel isn’t the nicest one in a dishwasher, it works pretty well and it’s very easy to use.
Through the control panel, you can set up the following cycles:
- Heavy Wash: For the toughest spots
- Normal Wash: For normal loads
- 1 Hour Wash: The express version
- Energy Saver: For lowering your electricity consumption
- Rise Only: One cycle without detergent
You can also select further options like Sanitize, wash at higher temperatures, heat dry and delay.
If you want to lock the controls, all you need to do is to keep the Options and Delay buttons pressed for three seconds.
Powerful Sanitization
The Frigidaire FFBD1831US is great to sanitize your dishes and baby items without using any detergent or chemicals.
It’s certified by the National Sanitization Foundation and its Sanitize cycle removes 99.9% of all common household bacteria.
Great Washing
The dishwasher has a top and bottom rack dual spray arm system to ensure thorough dish cleaning without any blockage.
You can set it up to run up to 24 hours in advance.
The drying is also very decent.
Although I found it to be a bit lacking, you can always run it a bit longer to get dry dishes.
Noise
Even though this is one of the “noisiest” options here, it’s by no means a loud dishwasher.
The FFBD1831US runs at a top volume of just 52 decibels, so it won’t drive you out of the kitchen if you want to have a conversation.
Dimensions and Weight
This dishwasher is on the lighter side at only 54 pounds (24.4 kg), so you won’t have trouble moving it.
- Height: 32.4 inches
- Width: 17.6 inches
- Depth: 23 inches
Bottom Line
Getting the right dishwasher depends on your budget, your priorities, and the amount of space you have.
Regardless of your preferences, I’m sure you’ll find your favorite option among the 5 dishwashers listed above.
Hope this helps!
